Xmas and New Year 2012

Well, it’s that time of year again and Thong Nai Pan, and Koh Phangan are gearing up for the festive season. Here at Luna we will be having a fun-filled Christmas night, with free eggnog or buck’s fizz all round, and an optional Christmas Dinner Buffet of Turkey and all the trimmings for 800 Baht.

Beach Christmases Past

We will of course have our usual menu of Thai and Western specialities and some Christmas desserts for those in the mood. Please pre-book by the 23rd if you would like the Christmas Buffet.

On New Year’s Eve we will be holding a beautiful evening to welcome 2012 – featuring a pig roast in addition to our usual menu, and some fantastic cocktail specials.

Zin will be dazzling us with his fire-dancing skills and just before midnight we’ll all head down to the beach to toast the New Year and set off lanterns, and fireworks – New Year’s Eve Thong Nai Pan Style. Later we will have a live dj and a relaxed party.

World Cup Showing on Thong Nai Pan Noi

It’s finally here folks…..World Cup 2010 is upon us, and here on Thong Nai Pan the excitement is rising hour by hour.

Sala cafe will be showing all the games of course, with the lovely Gordon cooking up some football grub for those games that fall late night in addition to the delicious Sala daily menu.

If you’re on holiday and want to join in the action come on down to Sala where you can enjoy our 42 inch flatscreen TV and an excitable crowd of friends egging on their teams.

With that, I just have one more sentiment to add on a personal note:

COME ON ENGLAND………………

The Very Talented Natalie Williams…..

Natalie Williams and Mark Brown play at Luna.

We were honoured last week with a fantastic live performance from Natalie Williams and her partner Mark Brown. Natalie is the resident singer at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club in London.

She has released 3 critically acclaimed albums and has played alongside Jamie Cullum and Amie Winehouse to name but a few. Her partner, Mark Brown, is a freelance saxaphone and keyboard player, he also holds a residency at Ronnie Scott’s. He plays Jazz and Funk in several of his own bands and has also worked with Ray LaMontagne, Craig David and Girls Aloud along with many more prominant names on the music scene.

We were lucky enough to have the pair drop by Thong Nai Pan Noi and come to Luna Lounge to play. With Mark on guitar and Natalie singing they perfomed a range of classics from Dolly Parton to India Arie, with even a great version of Oasis’s Wonderwall.

Natalie’s beautiful voice was mesmerising and along with her passion and easy chatter the place felt lively and intimate. Everyone joined in, a tambourine was passed around and any available surface became a drum. She encouraged everyone to sing along and with Mark strumming away the evening was a great success. Unfortunately they were leaving Koh Phangan the next day and so we had to satisfy ourselves with just the one night (although they had done an impromptu practise gig the night before too which had also been great to watch).

A massive Thankyou to both Natalie and Mark and we hope to hear you playing here again soon.

Golden Wedding Annivesary!

We were honored to host the 50th Wedding anniversary of  Fay and Eddie last week with a splendid evening of amazing food and beautiful surroundings. Most of the village of Thong Nai Pan Noi were invited and were treated with a range of mouth-watering thai curries along with freshly baked rolls and a mix of salads courtesy of our new chef Gordon. As you walked into Luna Lounge there were hundreds of little candles lighting up the walls, with a golden drape wishing Fay and Eddie a Happy Anniversary. The floral decorations were the final touch, a beautiful mix of white flowers amongst the green of the stems, artistically arranged and designed by Justin Lavigne, who we were lucky enough to have visiting Thong Nai Pan for a holiday. With the low romantic lighting and some melodic music the place was perfect.   At 11 pm, which was the time they said there vows in England all those years ago we brought out the cake, a delicious white vanilla sponge with a cheesecake filling and an anniversary message on top. Fay and Eddie seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. Watching them slow dancing together made me think how lovely it its to see the couples who do make it and are still genuinely in love 50 years later. Lets hope they have many more ahead of them!

Thai Break Germans descend on Thong Nai Pan Noi!

Every year Thong Nai Pan is taken over by around 200 Germans coming for Thaibreak, two weeks of mad partying with top german DJ’s on a beautiful and normally fairly quiet beach on Koh Phangan. The Thong Nai Pan hotels, bungalows and resorts are fully booked and other tourists have a hard time finding accommodation. Arranged by a man called Thomas who pre-books all the parties with the different bars and restaurants. From the opening night at Baan Panburi which is awash with fireworks and fireshows, each bar decorates and prepares for the hordes who arrive on the evening of their party. At Luna Lounge we are hosting two of the parties, the first of which was last wednesday and was a big success. With a great fireshow from Zen and some fantastic DJ’s the night went of with a blast and we hope their final party, also at Luna on the 31st will be an equally great night.

The revenue brought to the beach every year by Thaibreak is fantastic and is often the busiest night a year that many places have. They only hold one party in Thong Nai Pan Yai which is a fundraiser for the local school and is held on their grounds and at the local temple. Almost everywhere else closes and the majority of both beaches attend. Local businesses often hold food stalls and the choice of local cuisine is mouth-watering! The school children perform traditional Thai dancing on a stage in front of hundreds of tables and chairs set up for eating and socialising. The locals spend the days  leading up to the party decorating especially around the temple where they build a DJ booth and set up a bar. As you walk from the school to  the temple you are greeted by fantastic decorations and a night of dancing awaits you. It is a festive evening and a lovely chance for the both beaches to do something together.
